Paired with an equal partner. When you learn self defense you are rarely paired with a person who is so out of portions to you that you will have trouble keeping up with them while you practice. You will be paired with someone who is of equal height, weight and shape at first. Later on you might move on to other people but for the first part of Taekwondo you will practice on a person that is similar to you.

Three techniques. You will be learning three techniques in Taekwondo, the freeing technique, control technique and the termination technique. These will all come in handy should you need to defend yourself.

Martial arts have today become synonymous with self-defense tactics. This is probably because since their inception, martial arts were developed within the context of a greater individual awareness and appreciate of life and others. This has much to do with their origins in Buddhism dating back to the 500′s A.D.

The fact that martial arts are often taught as a defense strategy also has to do with many of their original precepts having to do with self-respect and respect for life. They were not developed for their sake alone but in tandem with mental and spiritual development.

Early practitioners most likely believed that as the body improved in terms of training and development in the arts, so did the mind and its ability to closer communicate and join with the body in the most minute and intricate of dances. Dance itself could also be described as a similar joining of the mind, body and spirit.

While the original practitioners of martial arts were taught to practice (in many cases as a life-long vocation) for the sake of discipline and mind and body awareness, the reality of self-defense and personal protection was never far away. It is believed that the development for martial arts had much to do with the growing need for Buddhist monks to defend themselves against attacks by marauding Huns of the Hunnic Empire.

Out of this need to defend themselves, Buddhist monks sowed the beginnings of what we have now come to know as martial arts. Thereby, self-defense classes, mostly based upon one or more styles of martial arts, promote not solely self-defense tactics but also the keen understanding that most self-defense takes place in the avoidance of potentially dangerous situations.

This is also why many martial arts teach that proper protection of oneself and loved ones should not solely depend on physical strength and size but more so upon timing, accuracy and above all avoidance of physical conflict whenever possible.

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art, it is one of the most practiced martial arts today and is also an Olympic sport. There are two main styles of Tae Kwon Do, traditional which largely originates from the Korean military and sport which is focused on speed and self defense. Tae Kwon Do is a very popular sport among kids. The sport teaches discipline, focus, listening skills and at the same time builds confidence and encourages them to exercise. A loose translation of the word means, “The art of the foot and the fist.”

Tae Kwon Do has multiple different ranks as well as multiple belt levels, not unlike many other similar types of martial arts. This particular sport, like Karate, uses a colored belt system to denote the level of mastery that a specific student has managed to obtain. Physically speaking, the martial art uses a lot of different forms of kicking as well as blocking and a variety of sweeping techniques. Visually speaking, this martial art is considered one of the more popular types of martial arts because of the large amounts of movements, which translate into an increase in visual appeal. Tae Kwon Do is one of the most used martial arts in films because of its activeness and strong visual appeal. Tae Kwon Do has been around for over 5000 years making it one of the oldest martial arts in practice.

There is a level of competition that is inherent in martial arts like Tae Kwon Do.
